Connecticut, New Jersey, New York

FTTH(Fiber to the Home)

FTTH(Fiber to the Home)

Overview of Requirements and Applications for 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet
Ethernet alliance August 2007
Executive Summary
Innovative and emerging server technologies including multi-core processing, virtualization, networked storage, and I/O convergence are contributing to a growing bandwidth requirement in the enterprise computing environment. Aggregating today’s 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GbE) compute devices and the future higher speed 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) interfaces in the data center requires 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) interfaces for the switch-to-switch interconnection. Similar aggregation effects are present in the carrier and service provider networks, where it has become increasingly challenging for service providers to accommodate customer requests for services due to the bandwidth constraints of their network core. 100GbE is the identified solution for providing the next generation of internet connectivity to continue to fuel the delivery of new services and content to the consumer and business customers.

The Expanding Digital Universe
A Forecast of Worldwide Information Growth Through 2010
March 2007, An IDC White Paper
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The airwaves, telephone circuits, and computer cables are buzzing. Digital information surrounds us. We see digital bits on our new HDTVs, listen to them over the Internet, and create new ones ourselves every time we take a picture with our digital cameras. Then we email them to friends and family and create more digital bits.
There's no secret here. YouTube, a company that didn’t exist just a few years ago, hosts 100 million video streams a day. Experts say more than a billion songs a day are shared over the Internet in MP3 format.ii Digital bits. London's 200 traffic surveillance cameras send 64 trillion bits a day to the command data center. Chevron's CIO says his company accumulates data at the rate of 2 terabytes – 17,592,000,000,000 bits – a day.iv TV broadcasting is going all-digital by the end of the decade in most countries. More digital bits.
What is a secret – one staring us in the face – is how much all these bits add up to, how fast they are multiplying, and what their proliferation imply.
This White Paper, sponsored by EMC, is IDC's forecast of the digital universe – all the 1s and 0s created, captured, and
replicated – and the implications for those who take the photos, share the music, and generate the digital bits and those who organize, secure, and manage the access to and storage of the information.

HOW BIG IS THE DIGITAL UNIVERSE?
The IDC sizing of the digital universe – information that is either created or captured in digital form and then replicated in 2006 – is 161 exabytes, growing to 988 exabytes in 2010, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57%
(Figure 1).
About one quarter of the digital universe is original (pictures recorded, keystrokes in an email, phone calls), while three quarters is replicated (emails forwarded, backed up transaction records, Hollywood movies on DVD).
A majority of these bits represent images, both moving and still. This is because one digital camera image can generate a megabyte or more of digital information, and video or digital TV can generate a dozen megabytes per second.
Voice signals, on the other hand, can be carried at less than one megabyte a second; and it would take a good typist more than a day and a half to produce a megabyte of keystrokes.
Although many of the images created are by individuals, they enter an organization’s domain in email systems, in Web postings, and in applications from medical imaging and public safety surveillance to compound documents supporting insurance claims, recorded Web conferences, and advertising and marketing content.
To give you an idea of where all these exabytes come from, just consider the number of devices or subscribers in the world that can create or capture information.

The Exabyte Internet
An Analysis of the Growing Flow of Billions of Gigabytes of Digital Data and Its Impact on Public Policy for the Internet.
May 1, 2007 / US Internet Industry Association
Executive Summary / 危機
Weiji [way-jhee], modern Chinese for “crisis”
Whether or not the coming growth in data on the Internet constitutes a looming crisis may depend on the definition of “crisis.” As expressed by an American translation of “weiji:”
The word “crisis” is composed of two characters.
One represents danger, and the other represents opportunity.
Recent research reports have suggested that the growth of data created by humans, some of which must inevitably transit the Internet, may create a situation in which it becomes impossible for the Internet infrastructure to handle the capacity demands for data, particularly video. While some have challenged the precise numbers, it is clear that the amount of data traffic on the Internet is growing at an accelerating rate. This will soon create a situation in which billions of gigabytes of data – called exabytes – will transit the Internet each year.
This is the Exabyte Internet.
And while individual consumers may not reach a level of data transfer of this magnitude in the short term, the Internet in the aggregate will. It will be necessary to continue high levels of investment in both the Internet backbone and in the backhaul subsystems that link each consumer to the Internet.
The Exabyte Internet promises to bring new services, applications and opportunities to both consumers and businesses in America, but it will not do so automatically. In addition to investments in additional infrastructure and capacity, there will need to be innovations in core technologies, innovations in network management, flexible strategic plans and a national broadband policy that supports investment and innovation over regulation and a continuation of the status quo.
This paper examines the available data relating to both the danger and the opportunity: the concerns as we move toward an Internet transporting billions of gigabytes of data; the likely effects on consumers, businesses and network operators; and the ramifications on Internet public policy as we grow from a Megabyte Internet to an Exabyte Internet.
It suggests four policy platforms necessary to the future of the Exabyte Internet:
. A better understanding of the data.
. A more realistic view of the Internet infrastructure.
. A “light hand” regulatory approach.
. A focus on investment as the national priority.

IEEE backs 40Gb and 100Gb Ethernet
Why settle for one standard when you can have two?
Andrew Charlesworth, vnunet.com, 25 Jul 2007
The IEEE High Speed Study Group (HSSG), which has been wrangling over whether the next Ethernet standard will be for 40Gbps or 100Gbps transmission speed, has ruled that it will be both.
A single IEEE 802.3ba standard will include specifications for both speeds and could be ready by 2010, which is rapid progress given the IEEE's glacial timescales.
The HSSG has been working on a new standard since July 2006, but has been split between telcos which favour 100 Gigabit Ethernet and data centre infrastructure vendors which prefer a less power hungry 40 Gigabit Ethernet standard.
As both parties have a good case, the IEEE has said that it will develop a standard for both speeds.
A faster Ethernet standard is required because, according to research by IDC and published by the Internet Industry Association, the amount of information created, copied and transmitted globally will increase at a compound annual growth rate of 57 per cent between now and 2010.
Traffic is already doubling every 18 months on carrier networks, and some network operators have begun to adopt 40 Gigabit Ethernet ahead of any formal standard.
For example, the Joint Academic Network that connects universities and other academic institutions upgraded its backbone links in London's Docklands in early 2006 from 10 to 40 Gigabit Ethernet.
Traditionally a Lan network protocol, Ethernet has been gaining ground in Wan and metropolitan networks as security and reliability features have been added to make it a robust end-to-end network protocol.
Ethernet was developed in the mid-1970s at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center, birthplace of the mouse and all windows-style operating systems.
It originally ran at 3Mbps. Since becoming the de facto Lan protocol it has been upgraded from 10Mbps to 100Mbps, 1 Gigabit Ethernet and latterly 10 Gigabit Ethernet.

EPON Goes to 10 Gbit/s
JANUARY 17, 2006
PETALUMA, Calif. -- Teknovus, the leading provider of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) chipsets for the deployment of IPTV in broadband access networks, and KDDI, one of Japan’s largest and most progressive telecom carriers, today announced a Next Generation Ethernet Passive Optical Network (NGEPON) roadmap with speeds of up to 10 Gb/s. This development program is driven by the new, bandwidth-intensive IPTV services that carriers will be introducing in the near future. As a member of the Ethernet Alliance, an industry group dedicated to the continued success and expansion of existing and next-generation IEEE 802.3 Ethernet technologies, Teknovus plans to further the development of NGEPON.
1 Gb/s EPON networks currently are being deployed successfully in volume by KDDI and other carriers around the world for IPTV and triple-play services. Upgrading these networks to faster speeds in the future will allow carriers to expand their service offerings; NGEPON systems will support hundreds of interactive channels, a rich mix of high-definition content, narrowcasting, and virtual personal video recording capabilities. Bandwidth requirements to support these services likely will exceed 100 Mb/s per user thus demanding a solution such as NGEPON. Progressive operators targeting the $150 billion entertainment television market can build confidently 1 Gb/s EPON networks today knowing that a roadmap allowing migration to higher-speed NGEPON is now in place.
Dr. Rex Naden, CEO of Teknovus, observed, “There is worldwide interest in the PON community for the next generation of EPON, especially from carriers who demand smooth upgrades to their current EPON investments. The need is clear, cost-effective technology is available, and the first products based on higher speed NGEPON will be announced during 2006. It is an honor to welcome a partner as prestigious as KDDI to join us in extending the capabilities of EPON.”
Mr. Shigeo Morita, Senior Manager of KDDI’s Terminal System Development, stated, “KDDI already is deploying 1Gb/s EPON in Japan. Our exciting triple-play service offering is attracting customers as fast as we can roll out the service. At the same time, we recognize that Ethernet technology and customer needs will not stand still and we will in the future have the capability to offer even more advanced IPTV and other services to the broader customer base. In this case it is critical that the next generation products be compatible with our installed base to minimize additional cost and maximize revenue. We believe the NGEPON roadmap will meet these objectives. Further, we plan for Teknovus and other semiconductor vendors to supply interoperable NGEPON chipsets to keep costs down and keep our options open.”
Mr. Brad Booth, President of the Ethernet Alliance, stated, “The Ethernet Alliance is pleased to welcome Teknovus as a member of the Ethernet Alliance. As part of their membership, Teknovus can use our incubation process to assist in the initiation of an IEEE 802.3 standard development project related to next-generation EPON. As part of our broader goal, the Ethernet Alliance supports enabling next-generation Ethernet to be the technology of choice for carriers and service providers worldwide.”

NetEffect PCI-Express 10-Gigabit iWARP Ethernet: A Performance Study
Recently, NetEffect Inc. has introduced the first and only iWARP–enabled 10-Gigabit Ethernet Channel Adapter. This white paper presents the performance of the NetEffect PCIExpress 10-Gigabit iWARP Ethernet adapter at the NetEffect verbs layer and the MPI implementation. At the verbs layer, our evaluation includes the basic latency and bandwidth tests for both Send/Receive and RDMA write operations, as well as the cost of memory registration. At the MPI level, we present the basic latency and bandwidth, aggregate bandwidth, hotspot bandwidth, and the computation/communication overlap ability for the NetEffect MPI implementation.
A Performance Study
Initial Performance Evaluation of the NetEffect 10 Gigabit iWARP Adapter
Interconnect speeds currently surpass the abilities of today's processors to satisfy their demands. The throughput rate provided by the network simply generates too much protocol work for the processor to keep up with. Remote Direct Memory Access has long been studied as a way to alleviate the strain from the processors. The problem
is that until recently RDMA interconnects were limited to proprietary or specialty interconnects that are incompatible with existing networking hardware. iWARP, or RDMA over TCP/IP, changes this situation. iWARP brings all of the advantages of RDMA, but is compatible with existing network infrastructure, namely TCP/IP over Ethernet. The drawback to iWARP up to now has been the lack of availability of hardware capable of meeting the performance of specialty RDMA interconnects. Recently, however, 10 Gigabit iWARP adapters are beginning to appear on the market. This paper demonstrates the performance of one such 10 Gigabit iWARP implementation and compares it to a popular specialty RDMA interconnect, InfiniBand.

By Steven Pope Chief Technical Officer
David Riddoch Chief Software Architect - Solarflare Communications Inc.

TCP/IP Offload Engine relieves CPU burden
Today’s CPUs are overwhelmed by Ethernet traffic, with an increasing amount of CPU cycles being consumed by TCP/IP packet processing. An additional
CPU can be added to share the load when this imbalance causes application
performance to suffer, but this is an expensive solution with several other drawbacks.
In this article, Alan discusses how the addition of a Network Accelerator Card (NAC) with an integrated TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) can relieve the burden on the CPU.

TOE
TCP Offload Engine (TOE) is the name for allowing the network driver to do part or all of the TCP/IP protocol processing. Vendors have made modifications to Linux to support TOE, and these changes have been submitted changes for kernel inclusion but were rejected. This page describes the reasons why Linux engineers currently feel that full network stack offload (TCP Offload Engine, TOE) has little merit.

Linux and TCP offload engines
The TCP/IP protocol suite takes a certain amount of CPU power to implement. So it is not surprising that network adapter manufacturers have long been adding protocol support to their cards. This support can vary from the simple (checksumming of packets, for example) through to full TCP/IP implementations. An adapter with full protocol support is often called a TCP offload engine or TOE.

Linux TCP Network Stack Analysis and Partitioning for Network Processors
Current high speed networks cannot be fully utilized by today’s high end systems. The processing requirements of applications and advanced services or security processing aggravate this situation. To overcome these shortcomings intelligent network cards with network protocol offload engines, for example based on a network processor, are necessary. To reduce development time, we reuse existing software protocol stack implementations for partitioning and implementing on the network card. Since manual partitioning is very expensive and faultprone, we use a modified automatic debugging tool for the analysis. We outline the results of Linux TCP network stack analysis and partitioning when using an automatic debugger.

Hybrid TCP/IP Offload Engine

An Efficient Linux Kernel Module supporting TCP/IP Offload Engine on Grid
All resources of grid systems are connected by network and Ethernet-based TCP/IP is a widely used network in the grid systems. The TCP/IP is processed on a host CPU in computer systems and this imposes heavy loads on the host CPU. Recently TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE) technology, which processes TCP/IP on a network adapter instead of the host CPU, has become an important approach to this problem. To adopt the TOE to computer systems successfully, it is necessary to develop a kernel module supporting the TOE. The TOE kernel module should provide the binary compatibility for the BSD socket interface, which is widely used in the most network programming, and support both of the TOE and the Ethernet-based NIC simultaneously. This paper proposes a TOE kernel module satisfying these requirements in the Linux systems. Experimental results also show that the TOE kernel module imposes little load on the host CPU.
